Ionic liquids in reference electrodes for biomedical measurements One sample that can be used for non-invasive biomedical measurements is sweat. So-called ""electronic tattoos"" have been proposed for continuous measurement of sweat. They are non-invasive analytical devices with sensors placed on their surface. Interestingly, there is little research into miniaturized reference electrodes against which the potential of other sensors is measured. One of the possibilities to develop new, more stable reference electrodes is the use of ionic liquids. The aim of the research is to establish the relationship between the structure and properties of ionic liquids and the stability of the potential of reference electrodes based on these compounds. The ionic liquids selected after this stage will be used to prepare reference electrodes on miniaturized planar transducers produced by screen-printing.
The area of scientific research concerns the search for new systems of ionic liquids in terms of the possibility of application in absorption refrigeration technology. The main objective of the work is the thermodynamic and physicochemical characterization of pure ionic liquids as absorbents and their binary systems as a function of temperature and composition. The conducted research includes synthesis, purification and analysis of ionic liquids, measurements of (vapor + liquid), (liquid + liquid) and (solid + liquid) phase equilibrium a wide range of temperature and composition, measurements of physicochemical properties, including primarily density, viscosity and heat capacity, as well as calorimetric measurements of excess mixing enthalpy. Experimental data are correlated using the Redlich – Kister, NRTL and UNIQUAC. The aim of the research is to select the most effective working pair, competitive for the {LiBr + water} or {water – ammonia} system used on an industrial scale.
The area of scientific research concerns the determination and correlation of the basic thermodynamic and physicochemical properties of a new class of pure organic salts and their binary systems with aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and with water. The conducted research is aimed at determining the influence of the structure of the ionic liquid and the solvent on the mutual miscibility and values of thermodynamic functions. As part of the implementation of this area of interest, phase equilibrium studies, calorimetric measurements of mixing enthalpy, density measurements as a function of temperature, pressure and composition, viscosity and heat capacity measurements are carried out.
As part of my scientific research, the desulfurization of fuels using Ionic Liquids, ILs and Deep Eutectic Solvents, DES is my challenge. Deep desulfurization of liquid fuels is an important and difficult problem in the global refining industry and is a challenge for many scientific laboratories around the world. A strong reduction in standards for the release of SOx oxides into the atmosphere is associated with the introduction of new standards regarding the sulfur content of fuels; in the USA since 2010 it is a maximum of 15 ppm and in Europe it is 10 ppm since 2009. I carry out desulfurization processes – EDS and desulfurization with oxidation – ODS in order to design an ecological and economically viable technology using a new class of solvents.
Recently, a new generation of compounds – Ionic liquids (ILs) – has been of particular interest from the point of view of applied research. They are defined as compounds that have a melting point below 100oC. Ionic liquids are made up of a large organic, often asymmetrical cation and a smaller organic or inorganic anion. Extremely low volatility and a number of unique properties of ionic liquids, i.e. low vapor pressure, non-flammability, high thermal and chemical stability, high heat capacity, the wide temperature range for the liquid state and total or partial miscibility in water and other organic solvents make them extremely attractive from the point of view of research and application in future technologies. My team deals with the synthesis, purification, quantitative analysis, physicochemical measurements and the use of ionic liquids in modern technologies.
