New drugs, effective especially in civilization diseases, are constantly in demand. However, introducing a new active substance to the market is very costly, which results in a relatively small number of new drugs appearing in the world every year. Often, even promising molecules may have low bioavailability and poor solubility, which prevents their effective use. Therefore, new modifications of already known active pharmaceutical ingredients are sought, using, inter alia, crystal engineering methods. They are aimed at developing methods of obtaining new salts, solvates, polymorphs, and co-crystals for already known drugs. Studies carried out in this area are based on structure correlation analysis and new algorithms using large databases to design new forms of selected active pharmaceutical ingredients. Then, the synthesis of selected systems is carried out followed by full characterization of the solid phase, most often by X-ray diffraction or spectroscopic methods. Pharmaceutical property studies are also being carried out on promising systems.
