Materials for medical applications have a variety of requirements regarding their properties, which are crucial for their safe and effective application in the human body. The most important of these are biocompatibility, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Surface treatment allows additional properties such as bioactivity and bactericidal properties. Promising in this field are methods using plasma-based surface engineering technologies (e.g. magnetron sputtering) to produce MeO matrix composite coatings (e.g. ZnO) doped with bactericidal metals (e.g. Ag). The correct shaping of the microstructure of these coatings is crucial to improve the functional and mechanical properties, in terms of specific applications. The aim of this PhD is to identify the mechanisms for shaping the microstructure and properties of MeO-Me coatings by adjusting the appropriate parameters in High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HiPIMS) process.
