1 The research area concerns the spectroscopic study of new dielectric materials doped with rare earth ions. The luminescent properties of such media can be shaped by the selection of the active dopant its close surroundings, the symmetry of the crystal lattice as well as the geometry of the structure. Optical spectroscopy is aimed at determining the basic luminescence or lasing parameters of such materials by analyzing their spectral properties. In addition to purely utilitarian purposes, such research makes an important contribution both to understanding the energy relaxation mechanisms in solids and contributes to the conscious selection, shaping and modeling properties of new optical materials.Therefore, the results of the research may be of practical importance in the selection and shaping of active solid-state materials for laser technology, lighting, light amplifiers and for the broadly understood sensorics.
2 Research activities cover the problems of producing, modelling and characterizing active media and photonic structures for laser technology, fibre optics, integrated optoelectronics, visualization, radiation detection, technology of light, sensors and photovoltaics. A significant portion of his scientific practice consists of spectroscopic laser study of the impact of multi-ion and multiphoton processes on the optic parameters of various types of luminophores and active media. Recently, this study has focused on the research of such active media as planar or optical fibre waveguides, structures with spherical symmetry, nanocrystals as well as ceramic and hybrid materials.
