1 The focus of the previously performed studies has been in the field of heterogeneous catalysts in reactions such as ketonization of carboxylic acids and their derivatives, as well as chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of α,β -unsaturated carbonyl compounds, including acrolein and its derivatives. The reaction can be carried out in liquid or vapor phase and is aimed at reducing the environmental fingerprint of organic synthesis due to the elimination of the need to use toxic organic solvents, gaseous hydrogen under pressure and does not lead to the formation of harmful by-products or waste. The future research will be aimed at expanding the knowledge regarding the selective transfer hydrogenation to specific carbonyl groups to obtain commercially interesting and potentially applicable unsaturated alcohols. The catalysts for this reaction will be metal oxides, especially modified MgO due to the basicity of its surface, which is beneficial in catalyzing these reactions. The investigations of the surface properties, the synthesis procedures and their impact on the activity of the obtained systems remains an important aspect of such studies. Various metal oxides exhibit a drastically different activity in the aforementioned reactions, hence several options will be investigated. Chemical Engineering
