1 ANTIBACTERIAL POLYMERS Substantial number of people die worldwide every year due to bacterial infections related to antibiotic resistant strains. The problem is driving research of novel polymeric antibacterial substances. We are trying to create polymers with lytic activity against bacterial cell wall. Apart of material synthesis, important aspect is to understand mechanism of polymer action at the molecular level, by investigation of interactions between molecule and the model lipid bilayer. We are using lipid membrane models in such technics like Black Lipid Membranes (BLM), Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) or several methods with use of fluorescent labeled liposomes. Our polymers are also tested with use of clinically isolated pathogenic bacteria. Chemical-Sciences
2 ANTIFOULING MATERIALS Biofouling is a process of accumulation of biological matter and growth of microorganisms, and higher organisms on surfaces. The phenomenon is present at any surface immersed in an aquatic environment, in any biological ecosystem, and, in the case of synthetic surfaces, it frequently leads to economic and healthcare consequences. Fouling is a recognized problem for biomedical applications, water treatment processes, and in the maritime industries. In BioMat team we investigate polymeric coatings to suppress biofouling and to understand the process at the molecular level. We develop thing polymeric films using various compositions, with aim to reduce adhesion of molecules and organism to surfaces, or to achieve self-cleaning properties. Chemical-Sciences
3 SYNTHESIS AND MODYFICATION OF POLYMERES In BioMat team we deal with synthesis of various polymeric materials. Particularly interesting part of this work is development of methods for controlled post polymerization modifications (c-PPM) so at the stage when polymeric main chain is already created in a polymerization process. We are trying to find methods to carry out such processes in a controlled, non statistical way. An important aspect of such research is understanding interrelations between reactive centers allocated along the polymeric backbone. Chemical-Sciences
