Highly flexible, double cross-linked organosilicon aerogels dried using a cheap and scalable method at atmospheric pressure The aim of the project is to overcome the problems related to the synthesis of typical aerogels by developing the synthesis of double-cross-linked organosilicon aerogels. ""Double cross-linking"" means that the precursor molecules (organosilica compound) are linked together in two ways: a silane bond (typical of all known silica aerogels) and a hydrocarbon bond formed by the polymerization reaction between the organic groups of the precursors containing a double bond. The presence of these second bonds will increase the mechanical resistance of the aerogels and their flexibility. The latter feature, in addition to improving the mechanical properties of the material, will enable the drying process to be carried out under atmospheric pressure, since the elasticity of the gel form will prevent the structural degradation that usually takes place when drying gels.
