ANTIBACTERIAL POLYMERS
Substantial number of people die worldwide every year due to bacterial infections related to antibiotic resistant strains. The problem is driving research of novel polymeric antibacterial substances. We are trying to create polymers with lytic activity against bacterial cell wall. Apart of material synthesis, important aspect is to understand mechanism of polymer action at the molecular level, by investigation of interactions between molecule and the model lipid bilayer. We are using lipid membrane models in such technics like Black Lipid Membranes (BLM), Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) or several methods with use of fluorescent labeled liposomes. Our polymers are also tested with use of clinically isolated pathogenic bacteria.
